PALLIVASALTURAI (628)- in Vellankarai division, Akkarai pattu north, Kalpitiya division, Puttalam District.
A Moorish village.
Situation.– According to Casie Chitty (1834) : “ Palliwaseltorre, a village of Akkarappattoo. Situated on the gulf of Calpentyn, 5 miles from Calpentyn.” 24 miles from Puttalam on the Akkarai pattu Kalpitiya road.
Inhabitants and Manufacture.–“It has about 1,000 inhabitants, and carries on a small manufacture of cloth.”
Live Stock. – “There are great numbers of black cattle, and also asses, but the latter are turned to on account.” (Ceylon Gazetteer, p. 180.)
Plantations. – Coconut gardens.
Mosques. – Two, at which the inhabitants, nearly all Moors, worship.
Population. – 1881: 50 houses; 134 males, 85 females, 219 persons.
1891: 39 houses; 135 males, 85 females, 220 persons.
1901; 35 houses; 79 males, 67 females, 146 persons.
Race.-3 Tamils; 143 Moors.
Religion.-3 Hindus; 143 Muhammadans.
