ELAVANKULAM (636) on the Uppu-aar, in Karativu division, Pomparippu pattu, Kalpitiya division, Puttalam District. Does not occur in the Cencsus for 1881 ; appears as Elevankolam in that for 1891 ; in the C. I (1881) as Ilavankulam ; and in the A. L (1907) as Ilavankulama.
Distance and Situation.- 18 ¾ miles from Puttalam on the Jaffna road, on the banks of the Uppu-aar.
Tanks.- Two large tanks.
Paddy Fields.- Cultivated.
Church.- A Roman Catholic church.
Live Stock.- A good number of black cattle and buffaloes.
River.- “The road at the 18th mile crosses a small river – Ilavankulam river – which is generally brackish, and only about one foot deep and twenty yards wide.” C. I (1881)
A Moor Village.- According to the C. I (1881) : “The prosperous Moor village of Ilavankulam is about 2 ½ miles to the left (of the river). The present road avoid this village by a new trace.”
Population.- 1881 : no Census taken. 1891 : 2 houses ; 5 males, 4 females, 9 persons. 1901 : 3 houses ; 14 males, 3 females, 17 persons.
Race.- 13 Tamils ; 4 Moors.
Religion.- 11 Christians ; 2 Hindus ; 4 Muhammadans.
Literacy.- 3 males
Age.- 5-15 6 males, 2 females ; 15-30 2 males, 1 female ; 30-55 3 males ; over 55 3 males.
Occupation.- 8 pasture and agriculture ; 1 other ; 8 dependents.
