MADAWAKKULAMA மதவாக்குளம்

MADAWAKKULAMA (663) in Katupota palata, Pallam pattuwa, Demala tulana, Demala hatpattu, Puttalam District. Given in the census for 1881 as in Kumarawanni pattuwa, and in that for 1891 as  Madawakkulama.

Distance and Situation – 12 miles from Anamaduwa on the minor road to Mandalana; 4 miles from the 8th milepost.

 

River- The Ratambala – oya runs through the village. (North – Western Province Gazetteer, 1875.)

 

A Moorish village, whose inhabitants were described by the Assistant Government Agent of Puttalam in 1884 as “an industrious population,” and the village itself as “comparatively flourishing, and they have good coconuts growing there.”

 

The tank, called after the village, if filled by a channel, which conveys to it water from a higher tank, Ihalagama, which is fed by the Ratambala  – oya (q.v). “The bunds require considerable strengthening all along their whole length, but this the people promise to do if the dam is put up and sluice inserted in their tank by Government. I shall most strongly recommend that this be the first work taken up under the irrigation vote for next year.”

 

Paddy Fields –  “Under Madawakkulam the extent of fields is 130 to 150 acres, and probably more might be asweddumized; and out of this large extent only ten acres were cultivated for last maha harvest, and none for yala, for want of water.” (Diary of Assistant Government Agent of Puttalam, 1884.)

 

Mosque – A pretty and tastefully built one, at which the inhabitants worship.

Plantations – Coconut gardens.

Population – 1881 : 16 houses, 37 males, 33 females, 70 persons.

1891 – 16 houses, 33 males, 21 females, 54 persons.

1901 – 21 houses, 41 males, 32 females, 73 persons.

 

Race – Moor.

Religion – Muhammadan.

Literacy – 10 males.

Age – 0-5 : 5 males, 9 females;

5-15 : 13 males, 2 females;

15-30 : 9 males, 13 females;

30-55 : 12 males, 7 females;

over 55 :2 males, 1 female.

 

Occupation – 24 pasture and agriculture ; 49 dependents.
