NAYAKERCHENA (603) in Tettapolai division, Akkarai pattu south, Puttalam pattu Division, Puttalam District. Given in the Censuses for 1881 and 1891 as Nayakarchenai.

Distance and Situation.- 8 miles from Puttalam on the Akkarai pattu road ; a mile from the high road.

Plantation.- Coconut gardens.

Population.- 1881 : 32 houses ; 68 males, 47 females, 115 persons. 1891 : 32 houses ; 67 males, 49 females, 116 persons. 1901 : 32 houses ; 52 males, 43 females, 95 persons.

Race.- 4 Low-Country Sinhalese ; 85 Tamils ; 6 Moors.

Religion.- 22 Christians ; 67 Hindus ; 6 Muhammadans.

Literacy.- 26 males, 3 females literates ; 1 male English literate.

Age.- 0-5 7 males, 6 females ; 5-15 10 males, 5 females ; 15-30 15 males, 16 females ; 30-55 17 males, 12 females ; over 55 3 males, 4 females.

Occupation.- 1 Manufacture ; 36 pasture and agriculture traders ; 1 professional ; 2 others ; 51 dependents.
